The Hope Union pedals take Hope's own cleats, supplied in two versions: the No. 5 gives one more degree of float than the No. 4, for a knee that does not like being held straight. The \u003ca href=\"\/en\/products\/srm-x-power-direct-road-pedals\"\u003eSRM X-Power Direct Road\u003c\/a\u003e needs a sole drilled for its cleat, like the one on the \u003ca href=\"\/en\/products\/q36-5-unique-pro-4-0-road-shoes\"\u003eQ36.5 Unique Pro 4.0\u003c\/a\u003e; it does not fit a three-bolt sole.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eThe platform follows the terrain\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe more downhill the terrain, the bigger the platform. The cross-country \u003ca href=\"\/en\/products\/hope-union-rc-xc-clipless-pedals\"\u003eUnion RC\u003c\/a\u003e keeps a small platform with no pins and a titanium axle, 324 g a pair. The Union GC, for downhill, gets the largest platform, with pins or grooved plates, both in the box. The \u003ca href=\"\/en\/products\/hope-f22-mtb-flat-pedals\"\u003eF22\u003c\/a\u003e is ridden without cleats, the foot held by a concave platform and eleven pins per side.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eSet pins and spring together\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eHope's advice for its Union pedals with pins: the rear pins should just touch the sole, with at least 2 mm of clearance at the front. The higher they are, the less spring tension you need for the same release effort; too high at the rear, they block the heel's rotation and the foot no longer comes out. After each change, readjust the tension screw. Without pins, the 0.5 or 1 mm shim, chosen with the supplied gauge, sets the contact.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eOn the road, the last millimetres\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe SRM X-Power Direct gets down to a 9.7 mm stack height with its cleat, 6 mm less than a conventional road pedal according to SRM. Above the axle, the cleat measures only 1 mm, and the whole stack drops to 9.7 mm: 6 mm less than a standard road pedal, according to SRM. Q36.5 advises lowering the saddle by the same amount. Shortening the cranks from 172.5 to 165 mm raises the foot by 7.5 mm at the bottom of the stroke: this pedal takes back 6 of them, so the saddle still has to go up by 1.5 mm.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe X-Power Direct was born from an exchange between Ulrich Schoberer, founder of SRM and inventor of the power meter, and Luigi Bergamo, founder of Q36.5.
