Clipped in, they stabilise the foot; unclipped, they give grip while you re-engage. In the centre, the Union dual mechanism, on a treated and plated Cr-Mo axle: 437 g a pair.

Pins and spring are adjusted together. Hope recommends rear pins that just touch the sole and at least 2 mm of clearance at the front. The higher the pins, the less tension you need for the same release effort; too high at the back, they stop the heel from pivoting and releasing becomes very difficult. After every change, recheck the tension screw.

Bearings and bushing are replaced with the Hope HTT186 tool, and the mechanism can go back to Hope for servicing. We offer it to riders who keep their pedals for several seasons.
