Setting off at 10 °C and coming home at 20 °C: that is the typical mid-season day, and the reason arm and leg warmers exist. With a short-sleeve jersey and bib shorts, the Hybrid arm warmers are worn from 12 °C and the Hybrid leg warmers from 8 °C. When the air warms up, they slip into your back pocket: 162 g for both pairs in M. A long-sleeve jersey, on the other hand, stays on your back until you get home.
The coaches' rule: below about 15 °C, you cover your knees. The joint has little muscle to keep it warm, and it bends 5,400 times an hour at 90 rpm. The Hybrid leg warmers are cut pre-bent at the knee, to follow that movement instead of fighting it. Below 8 °C, switch to bib tights.
Tuck the top of the arm warmer under the jersey sleeve, and the top of the leg warmer under the leg of your bib shorts: the gripper band is what holds it in place. Stretch your arms out to the handlebar to check that no skin shows. Choose the size by your height: too big, and the arm warmer bunches at the elbow and lets the air in.
The Dottore Pro UV sleeves are worn from 18 °C to protect your forearms during long hours in the sun: UV 50+ protection and silver thread in the knit, at 31 g a pair. Colour matters: a white fabric reflects most of the light, a black fabric absorbs it. For high summer, choose Optic White or Glacier Grey.
Around 12 °C for fleece arm warmers like the Hybrid, with a short-sleeve jersey. Above 18 °C, UV arm sleeves protect your arms from the sun without making you hot.
Slide the top under the leg of your bib shorts: its gripper band holds them in place. Choose them in your size; a leg warmer that is too big slips and wrinkles.
Arm warmers come off while you ride and fit in a pocket: ideal when the morning is cold and the afternoon mild. If the ride stays cool from start to finish, a long-sleeve jersey is more comfortable.
