The figure on the sidewall is not the width you will ride. In Pirelli's measurements, 2 mm more rim gives about 1 mm more tyre: the P ZERO Race TLR RS in 28 mm measures 28 on a rim with a 19 mm internal width, 29 on a 21. So start from your rim's internal width, then check the clearance in the frame. What you gain by going one size up is counted in air: volume rises with the square of the width, and a 40 mm holds roughly twice the air of a 28. It runs at lower pressure without squashing. That is the whole range of the P ZERO Race TLR, from 28 to 40 mm.
On a dry, hardpacked track, tall knobs have nothing to dig into and squirm under load: you need lots of small, low contact points, like those of the Touareg Race Gridskin. In mud it is the opposite: the Tundra keeps widely spaced knobs, inherited from an MTB tyre, so the mud clears between them. In cross-country MTB, the Python Race cuts its centre strip down to 1.5 mm high to roll fast, and leaves cornering grip to its side knobs. Each tread has its terrain: a mud tyre on dry ground loses efficiency, and Hutchinson rates the Tundra 2 out of 5 on that score.
A supple casing wraps around a stone instead of bouncing off it, and loses less energy: that is the 127 TPI SwiftEasy casing of the Caracal Race Gridskin. But the more supple it is, the more the sidewall flexes, and sealant struggles to close a cut in the sidewall: hence the GridSkin mesh on the sidewalls of the race tyres. For riding far, loaded or every day, the Touareg Hardskin protects the whole casing, from bead to bead: Hutchinson rates it 4 out of 4 for puncture protection, 3 out of 4 for performance.
The 30 mm runs at slightly lower pressure and smooths the road better, the 28 saves a few grams: 20 g difference on the P ZERO Race TLR RS. Choose according to your rim's internal width, which each product page matches against tyre size, and to the clearance in your frame.
By terrain: the Touareg Race Gridskin for dry, hard-packed tracks, the Caracal Race Gridskin for racing on rocky ground, the Tundra for mud and technical trails, the Touareg Hardskin for riding long distances, loaded or every day.
For a 45 mm tubeless tyre and 70 kg, Hutchinson recommends 2.25 bar as a starting point on the Touareg Race Gridskin. Take off 0.25 bar on a hookless rim, and never exceed the maximum pressure of the tyre or of the rim.
