Tyres and tubeless
Tubeless-ready tyres for road, gravel and MTB, and the valves to fit them. Choose the tyre for the terrain and the rim; a tubeless setup relies on four parts that have to work together.

A tubeless setup holds air without an inner tube because four parts create the seal: a tubeless-ready tyre, a rim designed for it, rim tape that closes off the spoke holes and a tubeless valve. Sealant does the rest: it plugs the pores of the casing and small punctures. All our tyres are tubeless ready, and most of our wheelsets arrive with rim tape and valves fitted: all that's left is the tyre and the sealant. To change a valve or its length, see the tubeless page.
Without a tube, there are no more pinch flats, where the tube gets cut between the rim and a rock. So you lower the pressure, and the contact patch grows: it roughly equals the load divided by the pressure. With a 50 kg load, a tyre at 2 bar puts about 25 cm² on the ground, 31 cm² at 1.6 bar. More contact means more grip and less vibration. Sealant closes a small hole in the tread on its own; a cut in a sidewall, rarely. That is why a race tyre like the Caracal Race Gridskin protects its sidewalls with a knitted mesh.
On a hookless rim, only the pressure holds the tyre in place: the ETRTO standard caps pressure at 5 bar there, and the tyre must be declared compatible. Pirelli does so for the P ZERO Race TLR RS, Hutchinson for its gravel and MTB tyres. The mechanic's rule applies to every rim: never exceed the lower of the two maximum pressures, the tyre's and the rim's. On hookless, Hutchinson advises taking 0.25 bar off its recommended pressure.
Tubeless runs at lower pressure, with no pinch flats, and the sealant closes small holes as you ride. An inner tube is still simpler to fit and serves as a backup in a tubeless tyre.
Yes, it is the emergency repair at the roadside: remove the tubeless valve, wipe out the sealant and slip the tube in. First check that no thorn is still stuck in the tyre.
A tubeless or tubeless ready rim, with airtight rim tape over the spoke holes. Most of our wheelsets come with rim tape and valves already fitted.
