A long-sleeve jersey is not necessarily a winter jersey. From 15 °C, the Dottore Pro covers your arms in the sun, with SPF 50+ sun protection claimed by Q36.5, for 125 g in M: the jersey for summer mountain passes. From 8 to 18 °C, the Dottore Hybrid Que blocks the wind at the front without a membrane and ventilates at the back, enough to replace a jacket. For autumn gravel, 7mesh's Seton holds warmth in a thermal fabric that lets it out on climbs.
The hardest thing for a jersey is the change in speed. At 10 °C, a climb at 10 km/h feels like around 9 °C; the descent at 50 km/h drops that to 5.5 °C, on fabric still damp from the climb. Hence fabrics that dry fast, and the coaches' rule: open the zip on the climb, close it before the top. Underneath, Q36.5 recommends a long-sleeve base layer at 8 °C and below.
A cycling jersey is cut for a torso leaning over the handlebar, not for a standing silhouette. Try it with your hands on the hoods: the fabric should stay flat on the chest and stomach, with no fold flapping in the wind, and cover the lower back. The women's Dottore Pro has its own pattern, inspired by skinsuits, with not a single seam at the front. The 7mesh jerseys, in a Trim Fit cut, leave room for a layer underneath.
On gravel and on trips, the back of the jersey replaces the bag. The Seton and the Ashlu Merino have five back pockets. The Ashlu blends 89% merino with 11% nylon: the wool regulates temperature and slows odours, according to 7mesh, so you can pull on the same jersey the next morning.
A thin long-sleeve jersey can be worn from 15 °C, to cover your arms in the sun. From 8 to 18 °C, a windproof jersey like the Dottore Hybrid Que replaces the jacket; colder than that, add a gilet or a winter jacket.
By chest measurement, then waist, with the brand's size guide. Judge the jersey in riding position, hands on the hoods: close to the body, no folds over the stomach, lower back covered.
Merino regulates temperature and limits odour, which matters when riding day after day on a trip. Synthetic, like the Dottore Pro, is designed to wick sweat and dry quickly during intense efforts.
