The top tube bag is the one you open most often. A bikepacker's tip: keep only what you use several times an hour in it, and carry the repair kit elsewhere. The opening matters as much as the volume. The magnetic flap on the Top Tube Bag 03 lifts one-handed and shows the whole contents of its 1.1 L at a glance. The Kreuza Top Tube Bag takes two to three gels in 0.40 L, with a waterproof zip that opens while riding.
The longer the ride, the further the bag stretches towards the saddle. The Top Tube Bag Large 02 holds 2.2 L in two compartments, a flap at the front for food and a zip at the back for the power bank, but needs 44 cm between the head tube and the seatpost. With a frame bag, fit the triangle bag first, then slide the straps of the top bag into place. At knee level, width decides: 40 mm for the Kreuza, 5 cm for the Top Tube Bag 03.
On a frame with threaded bosses, the bag bolts on: nothing slips on a shaped tube, and the paint no longer rubs under the straps. The Top Tube Bag 03 needs 7 cm between the first hole and the head tube. A workshop tip: a drop of low-strength threadlocker on the bolts, which trail vibrations would otherwise eventually loosen. Without bosses, the hook-and-loop straps also go around an integrated cockpit.
The Top Tube Bag Nano 01 holds 0.6 L and stays on with a magnet, on an O-ring mount or on the bosses with the Nano Bolt Mount 01. Cyclite measured its three Nano bags together on a standardised course: the difference from the bare bike, 0.30 dm² of CdA, is worth about 2.5 W at 40 km/h, and stays within the measurement uncertainty.
Bolt-on if the top tube has threaded bosses: the bag doesn't move and doesn't mark the paint. Otherwise strap-on, which fits every frame and goes around an integrated cockpit.
A bag 4 to 5.5 cm wide, like those in our selection, leaves room for your knees. The longer ones are tapered, tall at the front and low at the back, for the same reason.
What you reach for while riding: bars, gels, phone, a battery for the GPS. Tools and the inner tube are better under the saddle or in the frame, where you only need them when you puncture.
