Ciclovation made its name in Taiwan with bar tape: multi-layer foams, surfaces that hold your hand, woven or printed patterns. And the plugs and finishing pieces that close off a handlebar cleanly.
Ciclovation is the brand of Huangs Smart Cycling, based in Taichung, in central Taiwan. It became known for bar tape, which remains its core business, even though it also makes grips, bottle cages and small workshop parts. Its name sums up its approach: C for consistency, V for value. And it designs its products for the “service course”, the workshop where the riders' bikes are prepared.
A Ciclovation bar tape is a stack: a surface in PU or TPU compounds, with rubber depending on the use, laid over laminated multi-layer foams of different densities that absorb shocks and vibration. Most are 3 mm thick, the Grind Touch GXL 3.6 mm. Wrapped with an overlap, the tape doubles its thickness, and on a 23.8 mm handlebar, 3 mm of tape gives a grip of about 36 mm, 3.6 mm about 38 mm. Two more millimetres under the palm, four hours into a gravel ride.
For gravel, the GXL rolls are 2,300 mm long, enough to wrap a flared handlebar: the Grind Touch Diamond holds your hand with its raised diamond texture, the Polyhyde absorbs the knocks with its gel padding and comes off without residue. To put a signature on a road bike, the Stylishwrap Ethnic is a woven textile tape, the Leather Touch Minimalism a printed synthetic leather, of which MAAKE keeps only the silver and white prints, the ones you can read on the handlebar.
For a brand that makes bar tape its trade, and for the small parts that finish the job. The Lock-In plugs lock by expanding inside the handlebar and can be reused; measure its internal diameter first. The silicone Finish Ring replace the finishing tape, go on without removing the levers and can be used again at every tape change. All the brands are together in the bar tape collection.
The Grind Touch GXL: 3.6 mm thick and 2,300 mm per roll, for flared gravel handlebars. The Diamond grips through its raised diamond texture, the Polyhyde cushions with its gel padding.
Ciclovation recommends every six months to a year to keep the grip and the cushioning. A wipe with a damp cloth after your rides, to remove the sweat, makes it last longer.
They lock in place by expanding inside the handlebar: measure its internal diameter at the end. The Vortex Power Wave plugs need 18 mm or more, the Compass Neo 17 mm or more.
