The power lost to the air rises with the cube of speed: from 35 to 45 km/h, it is multiplied by 2.1, while at 15 km/h on a climb it is only about 5% of what it costs at 40 km/h. The Tucker III aims at the top of that scale: Sweet Protection optimised it for 45 to 50 km/h, in the wind tunnel, for breakaways and sprints. The Falconer Aero plays both sides: its magnetic covers close the vents when you ride fast and come off at the foot of the climb.
Wrap a measuring tape around your head, just above the ears, keeping it level from front to back. At Sweet Protection, S/M covers 53 to 56 cm, M/L 56 to 59 cm, L/XL 59 to 61 cm. The 360 Occigrip fit system and the fit pads supplied then fine-tune the fit. A well-adjusted helmet does not move when you shake your head with the strap fastened.
In a crash, the head rarely hits the ground at a right angle: the angled impact makes it rotate, and that rotation is what Mips aims to reduce. A low-friction layer inside the helmet allows relative movement between the head and the shell at the moment of impact. Both helmets in the selection integrate it into Sweet Protection's 2Vi platform.
Measure your head just above the ears, with the tape held level, then check the brand's size guide. At Sweet Protection, M/L covers 56 to 59 cm.
Above 40 km/h, the air takes most of your power: an aero helmet like the Tucker III pays off. In the mountains, ventilation matters more. The Falconer Aero, with its removable covers, does both.
It lets the head and the helmet slide relative to each other in an angled impact, to reduce the rotation passed on to the head.
