Hiram Hutchinson, an American settled in France, founded his company in 1853 in Châlette-sur-Loing, near Montargis. It first made coated fabrics, then, in 1890, its first bike tyres. In 1909, Léon Georget gave it its first race win on the “Monofil” tyre. More than a century later, Hutchinson still makes bike tyres in France.
The Caracal Race, both Touaregs and the Python Race are made in France, the Python Race by hand, in Châlette-sur-Loing. The latter comes from Hutchinson's Racing Lab, developed with the Decathlon Ford Racing Team. In 2026, the brand brought its GridSkin sidewalls, a knitted mesh against cuts, to its race gravel tyres: sealant closes a small hole in the centre, but rarely a gash in a sidewall that flexes with every turn of the wheel.
Hutchinson publishes its starting pressures. For 70 kg fully kitted on a 45 mm Touareg Race run tubeless, it recommends 2.25 bar, 2.75 bar on fast rolling terrain, 0.25 bar less on a hookless rim, and never more than the maximum marked on the sidewall. The actual width depends on the rim: according to Hutchinson, the 40 mm Touareg Hardskin reaches its stated width on a 23 mm rim, a little less on 21 mm.
For a brand that rates its own tyres frankly: 4 out of 4 for puncture resistance on the Touareg Hardskin, but 2 out of 4 for durability on the Caracal Race. At MAAKE: the Caracal Race and the Touareg Race for gravel racing, the Touareg Hardskin for riding far and loaded, the Tundra for MTB-style terrain, and the Python Race in 29-inch for XC racing with a number on.
In France for the models sold at MAAKE: the Caracal Race, both Touaregs, the Tundra Tan Walls and the Python Race, the last of which is handmade in Châlette-sur-Loing.
Hutchinson starts at 2.25 bar for 70 kg kitted out on a 45 mm Touareg Race, a little more on fast rolling terrain and 0.25 bar less on a hookless rim. Never above the maximum printed on the sidewall.
The Tundra, with widely spaced knobs taken from XC MTB to shed mud. The Touareg Race, with small, tightly packed blocks, is made for dry, hard ground.
