    The pattern starts from the Black Mamba, a Hutchinson MTB tyre, of which the brand kept only the most important knobs. The freed-up space lets mud clear instead of packing into the tread.

    The side knobs reach low down the sidewall, as on the brand's XC MTB tyres. They hold the bike on greasy roots, on off-camber singletrack and on loose descents.

    In the centre, a harder compound resists wear and keeps it efficient on the connecting roads. On the shoulders, a softer compound grips in corners.

    The Tan Walls version is made in France with a Hardskin textile grid that protects the sidewalls as well as the tread. It weighs 490 g in 40 mm, the Black version 560 g.

    Description

    The Hutchinson Tundra is the gravel tyre for technical trails: mud, greasy roots, off-camber sections, rocky descents.

    Its tread pattern starts from the Black Mamba, one of Hutchinson's own MTB tyres: Hutchinson kept only the most important knobs, so that mud clears out. The side knobs, set low on the sidewall, hold the line on off-camber ground, and the dual compound puts a harder centre, which wears less, between two softer shoulders.

    The two versions differ: the Tan Walls, made in France with a bead-to-bead Hardskin mesh, still weighs 490 g in 40 mm, against 560 g for the Black, without Hardskin. On hookless rims over rough terrain, Hutchinson's corrections bring its starting pressure down from 2.25 to 1.75 bar in 40 or 45 mm for a 70 kg rider with kit. The trade-off: Hutchinson rates it 2 out of 5 for efficiency.

    Its side knobs come from Hutchinson's XC mountain bike tyres. We offer it for gravel bikes that head onto MTB terrain.
