Choose the volume for what you carry, not for what you could carry. The Saddle Bag Nano 01 takes the inner tube, tyre levers and tool for a road ride in 0.5 L, and comes off in one move thanks to its magnet. The Saddle Bag Small 02 goes up to 6 L for a night out or an unsupported race. The Saddle Bag 02, with its 12.9 L, sets off for several days, with the sleeping bag, wash bag and spare clothes.
A loaded saddle bag acts as a lever on its mount. Two kilos centred 25 cm from the seatpost put about 4.9 N·m on it; brought back to 15 cm, that drops to 2.9, or 40% less sway. Hence the packing rule: dense items against the seatpost, bulky items at the end. Both 02 bags add an aluminium hook clamped to the rails and a carbon strip that stiffens the base, so they stay in line when you ride out of the saddle.
A bivouac tip: take the sleeping bag out of its stuff sack and push it to the bottom, where it fills the tapered shape of the bag and wedges everything else in place. The roll-top closes down over the contents, and the valve on the Saddle Bag 02 pushes the air out so the load doesn't float above the wheel. To balance a loaded bike, a handlebar bag acts as a counterweight at the front.
A large saddle bag needs room between the rails and the tyre: 21 cm for the Small 02, 23 cm for the 02, measured with the suspension compressed on a full-suspension bike. With a dropper post, add its travel. The Nano needs 18 cm of exposed seatpost, which can be tight on a small frame.
0.5 L is enough for an inner tube and a tool on the road. Around 6 L for a night out or a multi-day race, around 13 L for a tour with a sleeping bag and a change of clothes.
Pack the heaviest items against the seatpost, squeeze the air out before closing and tighten the straps once the bag is full. A rigid mount on the rails, like the aluminium hook on the Cyclite 02 bags, does the rest.
The Saddle Bag 02 product page allows for it: add the post's travel to the clearance required between the rails and the tyre, or the bag will touch the wheel with the post down. Measure with the post lowered before ordering.
