    Description

    The women's 7mesh Guardian Apex is the waterproof jacket for days that mix riding and walking: a gravel trip, a hike in the drizzle, a mountain pass climbed on foot pushing the bike. It is the all-rounder of the Guardian collection.

    Under the arms, two forward-facing zipped vents let air in as soon as you move. The hand pockets sit high, so they stay accessible under a pack's hip belt, and the hood goes over a cycling or climbing helmet. The shell itself is a 40-denier nylon on a PFAS-free GORE-TEX ePE membrane: more than 28,000 mm of water column according to 7mesh.

    Those vents are there for a reason: at 250 W at the pedals, the body gives off at least 750 W of heat, and shedding it through sweat would take more than a litre of evaporated water per hour, far more than a membrane lets through. Open them before you get hot. It does not insulate: keep the day's layer underneath. Take your usual size and raise your arms when you try it on: the stretch back follows. In cold weather, rain gloves complete the kit.

    It is designed and tested in Squamish, between the ocean and the Coast Mountains, by a team founded by Arc'teryx alumni. We chose it as the one jacket for bike trips.
