    Description

    The 7mesh Guardian Apex is the waterproof jacket that doesn't make you choose: on the bike for a day of bikepacking in the rain, on foot for the next day's hike. The all-rounder of the Guardian range.

    Its hand pockets sit high enough to stay clear of a pack's hip belt: you get the map out without unbuckling anything. Under the arms, two forward-facing zipped vents let air in as soon as you move. The fabric: a 40-denier nylon on a PFAS-free GORE-TEX ePE membrane, more than 28,000 mm of water column according to 7mesh, and a stretch back.

    Why vents? At 250 W at the pedals, the body produces at least 750 W of heat, because it turns only a quarter of its energy into movement. Shedding that through sweat would take more than a litre of evaporated water per hour, which no membrane lets through. Open them before you get hot. It does not insulate, hence the relaxed fit: take your usual size, a fleece fits underneath. In cold weather, rain gloves complete the kit.

    It is designed and tested in Squamish, Canada, by a team founded by Arc'teryx alumni. We offer it to those who ride and walk in the same jacket.
