    Key features

    Key features
Roues Elitewheels Drive II, 50 mm, logo Fusion Gold, gros plan

The rim measures 23 mm internal and 31 mm external, with hooks. A 28 or 30 mm tyre takes on a rounder shape on it, so you can run it at lower pressure, with more grip.

Roues Elitewheels Drive II, gros plan : rayons

Carbon blades of about 3 g, 8% stiffer laterally than steel according to Elitewheels' tests. They are not bonded: they can be replaced and adjusted one by one, like steel spokes.

Roues Elitewheels Drive II, gros plan : moyeu

A 50-tooth star ratchet with teeth cut to a cone, which increases the contact surface. A firmer spring limits ratchet skipping, and a new seal keeps water out of the mechanism.

S&S ceramic bearings, fitted in seats machined to within 0.02 mm. It is this fit, more than the bearing itself, that keeps rolling resistance low over time.

Roues Elitewheels Drive II, gros plan : les trois profondeurs

Three depths on the same rim width. The 36 mm is aimed at the mountains, the 50 mm does everything, the 65 mm is for the flat and fast rolling courses.

    Description

The Elitewheels Drive II is for the road rider who races or trains fast and wants carbon spokes. Its hooked rim with a 23 mm internal width comes in 36, 50 and 65 mm, from the mountains to the flat.

It all comes down to the spokes. They are 4.5 mm carbon blades, about 3 g each. Elitewheels claims they are 8% stiffer laterally than steel in its tests. That stiffness holds the rim in place when you push hard out of the saddle, and the effort goes into the road. The blades don't twist under tension and stay aligned with the airflow. Above all, they aren't glued: they can be replaced and retensioned like steel spokes.

The Kinetic hub has a star ratchet with 50 cone-cut teeth, which means engagement every 7.2 degrees. In 34 × 34, the cranks and the freehub turn through the same angle: that is about 21 mm at the end of a 170 mm crank. In 50 × 17, just over 7 mm. In 50 mm, the Drive II saved 5.2 W over its predecessor at Silverstone, under 15 degrees of yaw. It is designed for 28 to 30 mm tyres and riders up to 120 kg.

Elitewheels machines the Kinetic hub on its five-axis machines, and its carbon spokes have been racing with UCI teams for more than three years. It lets you ride carbon spokes without giving up on getting them repaired, which is why MAAKE offers it.
