    The supplied plates replace the pins and enlarge the contact area. Their horizontal grooves grip the sole and still let it twist to unclip.

    The dual mechanism works on each side, with stainless steel clips: the foot finds the cleat without flipping the pedal, and the front pivots to take it at a low angle.

    The No. 4 cleat releases at 12° with low effort, the No. 5 at 13° with more effort. These are Hope cleats, supplied as a pair.

    Description

    The Union GC fits Hope's own Union cleats, which come in the box. Gravity Clip at Hope, it is the largest platform in the Union range, for descending clipped in with the whole sole bearing down.

    It lets you choose the contact surface. With pins: up to seven per side, four at the back and three at the front. With plates: four plates per pedal screw into place, enlarge the contact area, and their horizontal grooves hold the shoe while still letting it pivot to unclip. It all turns on a Cr-Mo axle: 498 g a pair.

    The choice depends on the shoe. If the gauge measures less than 6.75 mm of depth at the cleat pocket, Hope suggests plates or pins to make up the stability. With a flat sole or high front pins, engagement can give a double click: the mechanism is nearing its minimum angle. Lowering or removing the front pins is enough.

    Hope supplies all eight plates and their 28 screws: the setup is decided on the trail, not when you order. We list it for riders who adapt the pedal to their shoe.
