    The drops spread outwards: on a 42 cm bar, the ends sit 48.6 cm apart. On a gravel descent, your hands hold the front end with more leverage, and nothing changes in your position on the hoods.

    Brake and derailleur run inside, fully or partly routed, through a 22 × 7 mm central exit. Housing wider than average can make routing difficult: check before fitting.

    The radius of the bend changes continuously from the tops to the drops, which multiplies the hand positions between the hoods and the drops. With 73 mm of reach and 115 mm of drop, every position stays within reach.

    Description

    The Ritchey WCS Butano is an aluminium gravel handlebar for riders who link tarmac and gravel tracks in the same ride. It all happens in the drops.

    The flare, the outward opening of the drops, reaches 18°. In 42 cm, the bar ends are 48.6 cm apart: each hand holds the bar 3.3 cm further from the stem than in the drops of a bar with no flare. That leverage is what holds the front wheel when a stone knocks it off line.

    Why not more? The brake lever clamps onto the bend and follows its angle: the more the drops open, the more the hood tilts outwards. At 18°, the tilt stays moderate and the wrist keeps its road position. The housing runs inside the bar, all the way to the frame with the WCS Switch stem.

    The Butano is named after Butano State Park in Northern California, whose trails Tom Ritchey still rides. MAAKE makes it its default aluminium gravel bar: control in the drops, familiar hoods.
