    Description

    Designed for cross-country, the Gnar SL SS pairs a 29-inch carbon rim with Sapim CX-Ray steel spokes. The wheelset weighs 1,215 g. The hookless rim has a 30 mm internal width and takes 2.2 to 2.7 in tyres.

    The heart of the wheel is its RapidDrive hub. It drives through a ratchet with 60 fine, angled teeth, which engage every 6 degrees of rotation. That shortens the dead time between the pedal stroke and the wheel picking up drive. The freehub body is titanium alloy: it transmits torque at a modest weight, and it lasts.

    On a 170 mm crank, with chainring and cog the same size, 6 degrees is about 18 mm of pedal travel before it picks up. That small amount of play matters most in technical sections, which the brand cites for this hub. The 24 spokes per wheel, laced two-cross on both sides, provide the lateral stiffness. Elitewheels sets three rules: 120 kg maximum, never below 25 psi, and cross-country as the only use. Beyond that, the warranty is void.

    Like every Elitewheels wheel, the Gnar SL SS is built by hand, then loaded laterally sixteen times to stay under 0.2 mm of lateral runout. MAAKE chose it for 29-inch cross-country, where the hub's pickup can be felt.
