Men's and women's bib shorts for summer, and bib tights for mid-season and winter. Choose the chamois, the fabric and the fit according to the temperature and the length of the ride.
The right bib short is the one you forget about, and temperature decides almost everything. From 18 °C, thin bib shorts like the Gregarius Pro, at 175 g in M, let your legs breathe. Between 8 and 18 °C, the short Dottore Hybrid keeps thermal fabric on the thighs. Below 15 °C, the coaches' rule is to cover your knees: the joint has little muscle to warm itself. The Dottore Termico handles intensity sessions from -5 to 5 °C. Bib shorts with leg warmers also cover cool mornings.
The chamois carries the weight of the pelvis on the sit bones. Several Q36.5 models have no centre seam at the crotch, where friction is highest, and the Gregarius Pro's chamois is built into the pattern of the bib short so it follows your movement instead of sliding. A tip from bike fitting: if the pelvis rocks with every pedal stroke, the chafing often comes from a saddle that is too high, and no chamois will fix that.
A compressive fabric holds the muscle and limits its vibration over long hours: the Dottore Pro is woven with graduated compression. Try bib shorts on in riding position, hands on the handlebar: the straps should keep the chamois pressed in place without pulling on the shoulders. The women's models have their own pattern and their own chamois; the Gregarius Essential shorts without bibs take everything off the shoulders.
On gravel and bikepacking rides, the jersey fills up fast. 7mesh's MK3 Cargo adds five pockets, two on the thighs and three on the back, to keep food and repair kit within reach. Its women's version, the WK3 Cargo, opens for breaks without taking off the jersey.
The straps hold the chamois in place without a tight waistband, which matters on long rides. Shorts without bibs are easier to pull on and freer around the upper body, popular for short rides and with many women riders.
Below about 15 °C, cover your knees: bib tights, or bib shorts with leg warmers. Below 5 °C, thermal bib tights such as the Dottore Termico.
With the brand's size guide, by waist and thigh. Bib shorts should fit snugly in the riding position, with no creases under the chamois. Standing up, they often feel a little short in the torso: that is normal.
